Old does not mean inactive
The median known formation year is 1904; 62 noticed companies were formed before 1950, and most are still in good standing.
DitchBook turns scattered newspaper notices into dated, source-linked signals about company governance, paper shares, assessments, and operations—and connects them to the company records needed for follow-up.
What we’re learning
This targeted sample shows old corporations doing current administrative work: calling meetings, electing officers, assessing shareholders, and replacing physical stock certificates. Those are useful signs of life, but not proof that a particular share is valid, transferable, or valuable.
The median known formation year is 1904; 62 noticed companies were formed before 1950, and most are still in good standing.
Lost-certificate events show active ledger administration; 4 also mention an estate process. A notice starts a trail—it does not prove a replacement was issued.
Most reviewed annual-meeting notices fall in January or February. 5 of 7 assessment events fall in January, making winter a useful monitoring window.
Coverage boundary: this is a human-reviewed, targeted sample from registered publications, not a statewide incidence estimate. Multiple notices may describe the same legal process, and a notice records what was published on that date—not the current outcome.
